You're Only Using Half Your Phone
Modern Android smartphones are packed with clever features that never make it into the marketing headlines. Whether you've had your phone for a week or a year, there's a good chance these tools are sitting unused in your settings. Let's fix that.
1. Quick Tap (Back Tap Shortcut)
On many Android phones (especially Pixel devices), you can assign actions to a double or triple tap on the back of your phone. Go to Settings → System → Gestures → Quick Tap. Trigger a screenshot, turn on the flashlight, or open an app — all with a tap you can't even see.
2. One-Handed Mode
Large-screen phones are hard to use with one hand. Enable one-handed mode under Settings → Accessibility → One-Handed Mode. This shrinks the screen downward, putting everything within thumb's reach.
3. Pin a Window Using Split Screen
Need to reference something while typing? Long-press the square (recent apps) button, then select Split Screen. You can keep a browser, map, or notes app pinned on half the screen while working in another app.
4. Live Translate in Real Time
Android's Live Translate feature works inside messaging apps, translating incoming messages to your language automatically. It also works during phone calls on supported devices. Find it in Settings → Live Translate or through the Google app.
5. Developer Options: Force 4x MSAA
This one's for gamers. Unlock Developer Options by tapping Build Number in About Phone seven times. Inside Developer Options, enable Force 4x MSAA for smoother graphics in compatible games.
6. Screen Attention (Prevent Auto-Lock While Reading)
Tired of your screen dimming mid-article? Go to Settings → Display → Screen Attention. This uses the front camera to detect if you're looking at the screen and prevents it from locking while you are.
7. Clipboard History
Long-press in any text field and tap the clipboard icon. On Samsung and some other Android devices, you'll find a full history of everything you've copied recently. No more re-copying things you already had.
8. Sound Amplifier for Clearer Calls
Found under Settings → Accessibility → Sound Amplifier, this tool boosts and filters audio from your microphone or headphones. It's genuinely useful for hearing conversations in noisy environments.
9. Scheduled Do Not Disturb
Stop manually toggling Do Not Disturb every night. Go to Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb → Schedules to set automatic quiet hours. You can allow calls from favorites and alarms to still come through.
10. App Pinning for Shared Devices
Handing your phone to a child or a friend but don't want them snooping? Enable App Pinning under Settings → Security → App Pinning. This locks the current app to the screen until you unpin it with your fingerprint or PIN.
Make Your Phone Work Harder for You
These features are already on your device — no downloads required. Take 10 minutes to set them up and you'll wonder how you ever managed without them. Android rewards curious users, so keep exploring your settings menu. You might be surprised at what else you find.
